Students Be Like . . .

Image
Donecal modeled the new relaxed look in class. Enjoy Spring Break.

CNC

Image
Some people say CNC stands for computerized numerical controller in this case I think it stands for cut 'n carve. On Friday, faculty were treated to a great demonstration of the intricate work a computerized router can do. I would like one for my makerspace, please. However, the price tag is a bit hefty. And I would need a Shop-Vac to take care of the dust as well.

WebQuest Example

Image
Let's say your school has the honor of taking care of Brian the ostrich for a week. Students will have to look up as part of their WebQuest what ostriches eat, drink, and how much space they need.

Recording a Story

Image
It seems even the simplest projects require a lot of technology. I was given the simple task of recording two chapters of a young adult novel, The Year of the Dog by Grace Lin. It required me to have a high quality microphone, noise canceling headphones, and a new copy of Audacity (free).

Ann Arbor Superintendent

Image
I ran into Jeanice Swift, the superintendent of Ann arbor public Schools. Some of you may be working for her someday.

FCC Commissioner

Image
This morning, in Washington DC, I got to listen to one of leaders of the Federal Communications Commission, Jessica Rosenworcel. The FCC is trying to figure out ways to close what they call the Homework Gap . This is when students are unable to do school homework once they get home because they lack adequate access to the internet. In the past we have called this the Digital Divide. There is still a lot of work to be done.

Geocaching

Image
Four years ago we cleaned up a geocache that was tucked under a bridge in our backyard. Since then, almost 40 kids or families have visited and signed a slip of paper. It's a great use of technology they catch you outside and enjoying nature a little.I was delighted to find that some of the visitors had left behind trinkets or traded trinkets that they found inside the box.  https://www.geocaching.com/

One Thing Leads to Another

Image
After working with one teacher at an elementary school on a technology-infused project-based learning TASC, I am starting to get requests from other teachers to support their use of technology also. If new teachers are looking for a way to make an impact in their schools, they should share their knowledge of technology with others.
