Student Post: Madison Morse - Social Media in the Classroom
Technology and social media are very valuable resources in this day and age. Social media allows people of all ages to communicate, share information, and discover new knowledge that they may have never thought about before. All sorts of social media apps such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Reddit… etc., provide opportunities for collaboration among teachers and students.
I believe that including social media within the classroom environment is super beneficial because of the new doors that open to the world of possibilities. I have had teachers who have used Twitter to share information that they thought was valuable for the students to learn. Teachers can share images, text, or even links to posts that they thought were interesting. Not only that, but teachers can share ideas with other teachers and reach a larger audience outside of their school system.
Teachers can use social media to acknowledge other students, promote events/learning opportunities, and alert students of homework or tests that might be coming up in the future. Social media is one way for everyone to become connected outside of the classroom, learning beyond the classroom. As well as social media being a valuable resource for the possibility of quicker communication.
As someone who's been a member of social media for many years, I know that social media does have a few consequences. People sometimes do share not-so-nice information or even using social media as cyberbullying. However, I believe that its features use their social media to strictly share things about school or things that might be useful for students to see then it could definitely limit the negatives that would come if it was used as a more personal public social media account.
When I become a teacher, I will definitely use social media to communicate with my students and provide them with resources. Social media definitely has more pros than cons, especially when it is being used strictly for school and education purposes. It is a great way to connect with communities, have parent and student interactions, and gain friends with other educators who have similar ideas or beliefs that you do.
